The function of the Bridge & Artificial Island is to meet the demand of passengers and freight transport between Hong Kong, the Mainland (particularly the region of Pearl River West-Zhuhai) and Macao, to establish a new land transport link between the east and west banks of the Pearl River, and to enhance the economic and sustainable development of the three regions. The bridge is the longest sea-crossing bridge in the world.
