The project is at the border control between Hong Kong and Macao. The main building of 685,000m² was designed by ARCHPLUS, but NIELSTORP+ architects were responsible for the landscape design associated with the building.

The function of the bridge and the artificial island is to meet the demand for passenger and freight transport between Hong Kong, the mainland (especially the Pearl River West-Zhuhai area) and Macao, to establish a new land transport link between the east and west banks of the Pearl River, and to strengthen the economic and sustainable development of the three regions. The bridge is the longest sea-crossing bridge in the world.
